Japanese in Abu Dhabi: what usually goes wrong
Abu Dhabi families often have a structural disadvantage that has nothing to do with the schools: the city is spread out, after-school traffic is real, and a tutor who would take ninety minutes to reach is not a weekly commitment anybody keeps. That is a large part of why online works better here than the alternative. The academic pattern is familiar, capable students who have never been shown what a mark scheme rewards, but the logistics make the delivery method matter more than usual.
The pattern repeats across schools, and it is rarely about ability. It is about the gap between understanding a topic and being able to perform it under the exact conditions the paper imposes. In Japanese specifically, these are where the marks go:
- Kanji learned in isolation rather than through compounds and readings, so recall does not scale
- Particles chosen by feel, which changes the meaning of the sentence
- Politeness levels mixed within a single piece of writing
- Listening left until last, despite being the slowest skill to build
Every one of those is trainable. None of them is fixed by covering the syllabus again more slowly, which is what most extra help amounts to.
Who this suits
Students taking Japanese at school or preparing for JLPT or study in Japan, and self-taught learners who have plateaued because kanji was never systematised. It suits people who can commit to steady daily work, since the writing system rewards consistency far more than intensity.
Which level is your child at?
Each level asks for something different, and preparation that ignores that difference wastes time. These pages set out what changes at each stage:
How lessons run
One-to-one, over video, with a shared whiteboard so tutor and student work on the same page at the same time. Sixty minutes is the default; twice weekly in the eight weeks before a paper.
Every session starts with marked work from the previous week, moves to the day's topic with a worked example, and ends with the student attempting a real past paper question live. After it, you get a written note from the tutor saying what was covered and what needs to happen next. The full process is here.
What it costs
USD 20-40 per 60-minute lesson, depending on level: the same rate wherever the student is, because the lesson is the same. Billed monthly against lessons actually taught, with no prepaid blocks and no minimum commitment. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.
Japanese tutoring in Abu Dhabi: common questions
How much of the difficulty is the writing system?
A great deal of it early on. Three scripts have to be managed at once, and kanji in particular determines whether the final year is feasible. A systematic approach from the beginning matters more in Japanese than in almost any other language.
Why do particles cause so many errors?
Because they are chosen by feel rather than by rule, and the wrong particle changes the meaning rather than merely sounding odd. Learning them explicitly, with contrasting examples, resolves most of it.
Does politeness level affect marks?
Yes. Mixing politeness levels within a single piece of writing is a visible error to an examiner, and consistency is part of what is being assessed.
What time do lessons run for students in Abu Dhabi?
Weekday evenings between roughly 4pm and 9pm Gulf Standard Time, which fits around a school day that usually ends between 2pm and 3:30pm. Because the city is spread out, online removes the travel that makes an in-person weekly slot so hard to keep.
Do you cover the IB Diploma as well as A Level?
Yes, and Abu Dhabi has a substantial IB sector. The Diploma needs a different kind of support from A Level: Internal Assessments and the Extended Essay are deadline-driven coursework worth a large share of the grade, and they are what most often slips.
Are you licensed to tutor in Abu Dhabi?
We are an online practice teaching from outside the UAE, and we do not hold a UAE tutoring permit or education licence. We would rather state that plainly than be vague about it. If regulatory status matters to you, raise it when you get in touch and we will answer directly.
