IGCSE and GCSE · Years 10-11
IGCSE English Literature tutors
Set texts plus unseen material. Building a bank of short, precise quotations is far more useful than memorising long passages, because the marks come from analysing specific word choices rather than from demonstrating recall of the text.

What IGCSE and GCSE actually demands
The first qualifications that appear on a transcript, and the point at which most families first consider tutoring. Two years, usually eight to ten subjects, and a step up in independence that catches out students who coasted through Year 9.
Close reading and argument. The marks are for a sustained interpretation anchored in specific textual detail, not for knowing the plot, and not for a general appreciation of the writing.
Where IGCSE English Literature students lose marks
- Retelling the story instead of building an argument about how the text works
- Quotations dropped in without close analysis of the specific words chosen
- Context bolted on as a paragraph of biography rather than used to illuminate the text
- Unseen poetry and prose avoided in revision, despite being the most trainable part of the paper
Is this the right subject at this level?
Students heading for humanities, law or any essay-based degree, and anyone whose essays are well written but score mid-band because they retell rather than argue.
What it costs
USD 20-28 per 60-minute one-to-one lesson at IGCSE and GCSE, the same rate in every city we teach in. Billed monthly against lessons actually taught, with no prepaid blocks and no minimum commitment.
Paired lessons (2 students) are USD 14-20 per student. Small group lessons (up to 6 students) are USD 10-14 per student. What each format is good for is here.
How we teach it
One-to-one, online, with a shared whiteboard. The first thing we establish is the exact syllabus the student is entered for: schools do not always publish the version they actually enter, and preparing for the wrong paper structure wastes a term.
After that the work is diagnostic: a past paper under timed conditions, marked together against the published scheme, to find out where the marks are genuinely going. That is almost always more useful than covering the syllabus again more slowly. The full process is here.
English Literature: questions parents ask
Why do well-written essays score in the middle band?
Usually because they retell rather than argue. The marks are for a sustained interpretation supported by close analysis of specific words. An essay that summarises the plot accurately and elegantly is answering a question the examiner did not ask.
How should quotations be learned?
Short and precise rather than long. A student needs quotations they can deploy and analyse word by word under time pressure; long passages are hard to recall and harder to use analytically.
Is unseen poetry worth practising?
It is one of the most trainable parts of the paper, and one of the least practised. The approach is consistent (form, structure, language, effect) and repeated timed attempts improve it quickly.
