Tutoring for Birmingham families
Birmingham still runs selective grammar schools, and that single fact shapes more of the tutoring here than anything else. Families arrive with a Year 5 child and a test date, and then, several years later, with a Year 10 child who cleared that test and is now in a cohort where being average means something different than it did before. Both are real situations and they need opposite responses. The second is the one we are more useful for: a student who is genuinely able, sitting in the middle of a strong set, whose confidence has taken the hit rather than their understanding. Working out which of those two it is takes one look at a marked paper.
We work around the school week rather than against it. Monday to Friday, with most secondary schools finishing between 3pm and 3:30pm, so lessons run mostly on weekday evenings, with weekend morning slots opening up before exam series. GCSE and A Level are sat in the May/June series, with results in August.
Why online rather than in person
Because for most subjects it is better, not merely cheaper. A shared screen means the tutor sees exactly what the student writes, where they hesitate and what they delete, which is considerably more diagnostic than watching someone work across a kitchen table. It also removes travel from the equation entirely, which in this city is not a small consideration.
We teach online only and do not offer in-home tutoring.

Questions from Birmingham families
Do you prepare students for the grammar school entrance test?
No. We work from IGCSE and GCSE level upward. Eleven-plus preparation is a separate field with its own specialists and we do not pretend to be among them.
My child got into a selective school and is now mid-table. Should we worry?
Usually not, and the distinction matters. In a selected cohort the comparison group has changed, so a student performing around the middle may be doing exactly as well as they were before. What is worth checking is whether the marked work shows understanding with technique marks lost, which is fixable quickly, or genuine content gaps, which take longer. We will tell you which we see.
What time do lessons run?
Weekday evenings UK time, usually 4pm to 8pm, with weekend mornings before the summer series.
How does the free 1-hour trial class work?
You book a time, we call you, and we ask what is actually going wrong, the syllabus code, the year group, what the last report said, and what you have already tried. At the end of it we tell you whether we think tutoring will help, and if so what shape it should take. If we do not think we are the right fit, we say so on that call. There is no charge and no obligation to book anything afterwards.
Are lessons online or in person?
Online only. Every lesson is taught over video with a shared whiteboard and a live code editor, so the student and the tutor can write and run the same code at the same time. We do not offer in-home or in-person tutoring anywhere.
Who will actually teach my child?
A specialist we match to the subject, level and problem you describe when you get in touch. You will meet them on an introductory call before anything is booked, and it stays the same person week to week: continuity is most of what makes tutoring work. We will never name a tutor before one has actually been assigned.
How quickly can lessons start?
We reply within one working day, then match a specialist and tell you when the free trial class can happen the week after. If you are in an exam term and the timeline is tighter than that, say so on the call and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet it.
What happens if it is not working?
Tell us early rather than late. Sometimes the fix is a different approach; sometimes it is a different tutor; occasionally the honest answer is that tutoring is not the bottleneck and something else is. We would rather have that conversation in week three than have you quietly stop booking.
