Online tutoring
Further Mathematics tutors
A full second A Level in mathematics, covering complex numbers, matrices, differential equations and further mechanics or statistics. It is the standard signal to competitive engineering, mathematics and computing courses that a student can handle the pace.
- USD 28-40 per hour
- A Level
- University
Who takes Further Mathematics, and who should
Students already comfortable in A Level Maths who want a quantitative degree at a selective university. It is a poor choice for a student who is finding single Maths hard: the correct move there is to make single Maths excellent.
Where students actually lose marks
These are the patterns we see repeatedly. None of them are about ability, and every one of them is trainable, which is why a diagnosis is worth more than a general offer of help.
- Timetabling: it is often taught in compressed sessions or partly self-taught, so gaps open quietly
- Complex numbers and matrices introduced abstractly, with no sense of what they are for
- Trying to keep pace with Further content while single Maths is still shaky underneath
- Differential equations reduced to a set of recipes rather than a method of modelling
Further Mathematics at each level
Further Mathematics at AS and A Level
Sat alongside A Level Mathematics, usually across the same two years. The core is compulsory and the optional modules vary by school, so the first thing to establish is which options a student is actually entered for: Further Mechanics and Further Statistics need completely different preparation.
Further Mathematics at University
The content maps closely onto first-year engineering and mathematics modules, which is why students who did it well find the first university term far less punishing than those who did not.
What Further Mathematics tutoring costs
| Level | Typical years | Per hour |
|---|---|---|
| AS and A Level | Years 12-13 | USD 28-34 |
| University | Undergraduate | USD 34-40 |
One-to-one, per 60-minute lesson, billed monthly against lessons actually taught. The same rates apply in every city we teach in, and the subject does not change the price. Paired and small-group rates are on the pricing page.
How lessons run
One-to-one over video with a shared whiteboard, so tutor and student work on the same page at the same time. Sixty minutes weekly as standard, twice weekly in the eight weeks before a paper.
Every session starts with marked work from the previous week, moves to the day's topic with a worked example, and ends with the student attempting a real past paper question while the tutor watches how they approach it. After it you get a written note from the tutor saying what was covered and what needs to happen next. The full process is here.
Further Mathematics: questions parents ask
Do universities require Further Maths?
A small number of competitive mathematics and engineering courses ask for it, and many more treat it as a strong positive signal. Requirements vary by course and change, so check the specific universities on your child's list rather than assuming.
Can it be taken if single Maths is shaky?
It is a bad idea. Further Maths assumes single Maths is fluent, and trying to carry both when the foundation is unstable usually pulls down the grade that actually matters. Making single Maths excellent is the better use of the same hours.
Which optional modules will my child sit?
That depends entirely on the school, Further Mechanics and Further Statistics need completely different preparation. Establishing which options a student is entered for is the first thing to confirm, because revising the wrong one is a costly mistake.
