IB Statistics tutors
Weighted heavily in Applications and Interpretation, and the Internal Assessment often uses statistical methods regardless of which Maths route a student takes. Choosing a dataset that supports genuine analysis, rather than one that is merely available, is most of the battle.

What IB Diploma actually demands
Six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. The workload is the defining feature, and the Internal Assessments, coursework worth a substantial share of each subject grade, are what most often slip.
The mathematics of uncertainty, distributions, sampling, hypothesis testing and regression. It appears inside Maths A Level, as a standalone qualification, and as a required module in psychology, economics, business and biology degrees.
Where IB Statistics students lose marks
- Hypothesis testing performed correctly and then concluded wrongly: the arithmetic is fine, the sentence at the end is not
- Choosing the wrong distribution because the conditions for each were never clearly separated
- Calculator statistical functions used without understanding, so an implausible answer goes unnoticed
- Interpreting correlation as causation in exactly the way the mark scheme is waiting for
Is this the right subject at this level?
Students taking it as part of A Level or IB Maths, and undergraduates in social sciences or life sciences who did not expect their degree to contain this much mathematics and now need it to.
What it costs
USD 30-36 per 60-minute one-to-one lesson at IB Diploma, the same rate in every city we teach in. Billed monthly against lessons actually taught, with no prepaid blocks and no minimum commitment.
Paired lessons (2 students) are USD 21-25 per student. Small group lessons (up to 6 students) are USD 15-18 per student. What each format is good for is here.
How we teach it
One-to-one, online, with a shared whiteboard. The first thing we establish is the exact syllabus the student is entered for: schools do not always publish the version they actually enter, and preparing for the wrong paper structure wastes a term.
After that the work is diagnostic: a past paper under timed conditions, marked together against the published scheme, to find out where the marks are genuinely going. That is almost always more useful than covering the syllabus again more slowly. The full process is here.
Statistics: questions parents ask
Why do students who avoid maths still meet statistics?
Because psychology, economics, business, geography and biology all depend on it. Students who chose those subjects specifically to avoid mathematics often meet a compulsory statistics module and find it the hardest part of the course.
What is the most common way marks are lost?
The conclusion. Students carry out a hypothesis test correctly and then write the final sentence in a way that overstates what was shown, or reverses the logic. The arithmetic is fine; the interpretation is what the mark scheme is actually testing.
Is it worth revising if it is only part of the Maths A Level?
Very much so. The applied section has a short topic list and highly predictable question types, so marks are usually easier to recover there than in Pure, and it is consistently the part students revise last, if at all.
