Computer Science in Doha: what usually goes wrong
Doha has an unusually concentrated international school sector for a city of its size, and a notably high proportion of students on the IB Diploma. That shapes what families need help with: the Diploma's Internal Assessments and Extended Essay are worth a large share of the final score, they are deadline-driven rather than exam-driven, and they are the part that most often slips while a student concentrates on the subjects that feel more urgent.
The pattern repeats across schools, and it is rarely about ability. It is about the gap between understanding a topic and being able to perform it under the exact conditions the paper imposes. In Computer Science specifically, these are where the marks go:
- Writing code that works but cannot be explained in the terms the mark scheme wants
- Tracing an algorithm on paper under time pressure without a computer to check it
- Losing marks on binary, hexadecimal and two's complement arithmetic that was never properly drilled
- Treating the theory paper as memorisation when it tests applied understanding
Every one of those is trainable. None of them is fixed by covering the syllabus again more slowly, which is what most extra help amounts to.

How lessons run
One-to-one, over video, with a shared whiteboard so tutor and student work on the same page at the same time. Sixty minutes is the default; twice weekly in the eight weeks before a paper.
Every session starts with marked work from the previous week, moves to the day's topic with a worked example, and ends with the student attempting a real past paper question live. Computer Science tutoring in Doha: common questions
My child is good at coding but their grade is poor. Why?
Because the exam does not test coding the way they practise it. It asks for algorithms written by hand in pseudocode, traced through a table, and explained in the vocabulary of the mark scheme. A student who builds things all weekend can still lose half the programming paper.
Computer Science or ICT, which should we choose?
Computer Science if the student is comfortable with abstraction and wants a technical degree route; ICT if they prefer applied, precision-driven work assessed largely at a computer. Neither is the easy option: they are difficult in different directions.
Which programming language will be taught?
Usually Python, because it is what most schools use and it maps cleanly onto exam pseudocode. For A Level practical papers we work in whichever language the student will actually sit the paper in.
Do you support the IB Diploma specifically?
Yes, and it matters more in Doha than in most Gulf cities given how many students here are on the Diploma. The Internal Assessments, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge together carry a large share of the final score, run on deadlines rather than exam dates, and are the part that most often slips.
What time do lessons run in Doha?
Evenings in Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3, Sunday to Thursday, with weekend mornings on Friday and Saturday before exam series. That is one hour behind the UAE.
When should we start if the exams are in May?
Earlier than most families do. For IB in particular, the coursework deadlines fall through the autumn and spring, so starting in the term before the exams means walking into work that is already overdue rather than getting ahead of it.
