IELTS in Doha: what usually goes wrong
Doha has an unusually concentrated international school sector for a city of its size, and a notably high proportion of students on the IB Diploma. That shapes what families need help with: the Diploma's Internal Assessments and Extended Essay are worth a large share of the final score, they are deadline-driven rather than exam-driven, and they are the part that most often slips while a student concentrates on the subjects that feel more urgent.
The pattern repeats across schools, and it is rarely about ability. It is about the gap between understanding a topic and being able to perform it under the exact conditions the paper imposes. In IELTS specifically, these are where the marks go:
- Writing Task 2 essays that are fluent but do not fully address every part of the prompt, which caps Task Response
- Task 1 reports that list every figure instead of selecting and comparing key features
- Reading run as a comprehension exercise rather than with the scanning technique the time limit demands
- Speaking Part 2 answers that run short because the one minute of preparation was not used properly
Every one of those is trainable. None of them is fixed by covering the syllabus again more slowly, which is what most extra help amounts to.
Who this suits
Students applying to universities abroad, and professionals needing a band score for immigration or registration. Academic and General Training are different tests and the choice depends on what the score is for.
Which level is your child at?
Each level asks for something different, and preparation that ignores that difference wastes time. These pages set out what changes at each stage:
How lessons run
One-to-one, over video, with a shared whiteboard so tutor and student work on the same page at the same time. Sixty minutes is the default; twice weekly in the eight weeks before a paper.
Every session starts with marked work from the previous week, moves to the day's topic with a worked example, and ends with the student attempting a real past paper question live. After it, you get a written note from the tutor saying what was covered and what needs to happen next. The full process is here.
What it costs
USD 25-35 per 60-minute lesson, depending on level: the same rate wherever the student is, because the lesson is the same. Billed monthly against lessons actually taught, with no prepaid blocks and no minimum commitment. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.
IELTS tutoring in Doha: common questions
How quickly can a band score improve?
A half-band is often one fixable habit away, particularly in writing, where the criteria are published in full. Larger jumps take longer and depend on underlying language level rather than technique alone.
Academic or General Training?
It depends entirely on what the score is for, university study generally requires Academic, while immigration and some professional registration accept General Training. Confirm with the receiving institution before booking.
What is the most common writing mistake?
Not addressing every part of the prompt. A fluent, well-organised essay that answers two thirds of the question is capped on Task Response regardless of how good the English is.
Do you support the IB Diploma specifically?
Yes, and it matters more in Doha than in most Gulf cities given how many students here are on the Diploma. The Internal Assessments, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge together carry a large share of the final score, run on deadlines rather than exam dates, and are the part that most often slips.
What time do lessons run in Doha?
Evenings in Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3, Sunday to Thursday, with weekend mornings on Friday and Saturday before exam series. That is one hour behind the UAE.
When should we start if the exams are in May?
Earlier than most families do. For IB in particular, the coursework deadlines fall through the autumn and spring, so starting in the term before the exams means walking into work that is already overdue rather than getting ahead of it.
