French in Dubai: what usually goes wrong

Dubai's schools sit at the sharp end of a problem their curricula were never designed for: classes are often taught by teachers whose specialism is something adjacent, in schools expanding faster than they can hire. Strong students coast through Year 10 on general ability and then meet an exam that asks for something specific (a precise definition, an argued judgement, an algorithm written cold on paper) and discover that ability was never the thing being tested.

The pattern repeats across schools, and it is rarely about ability. It is about the gap between understanding a topic and being able to perform it under the exact conditions the paper imposes. In French specifically, these are where the marks go:

• Speaking under-practised because it is the least comfortable skill, despite being very trainable
• Vocabulary learned as isolated words rather than in the phrases that make it usable under pressure
• Verb tenses recognised in reading but not produced accurately in writing
• Listening treated as untrainable, when it improves quickly with the right structured practice

Every one of those is trainable. None of them is fixed by covering the syllabus again more slowly, which is what most extra help amounts to.

How lessons run

One-to-one, over video, with a shared whiteboard so tutor and student work on the same page at the same time. Sixty minutes is the default; twice weekly in the eight weeks before a paper.

Every session starts with marked work from the previous week, moves to the day's topic with a worked example, and ends with the student attempting a real past paper question live.
