German in Jeddah: what usually goes wrong

Jeddah has an older and more settled international school sector than Riyadh, which changes the nature of the problem rather than removing it. Schools here are less likely to be understaffed and more likely to be large, and in a large cohort a student who is quietly a grade below target is easy to miss until the mocks. The Sunday-to-Thursday week applies here too and needs building into any lesson schedule.

The pattern repeats across schools, and it is rarely about ability. It is about the gap between understanding a topic and being able to perform it under the exact conditions the paper imposes. In German specifically, these are where the marks go:

• The case system half-learned, so adjective endings and articles are guessed
• Word order in subordinate clauses producing errors that obscure otherwise good content
• Separable verbs and modal constructions avoided in writing, which limits the range that earns marks
• Speaking rehearsed as memorised answers that collapse when the examiner asks a follow-up

Every one of those is trainable. None of them is fixed by covering the syllabus again more slowly, which is what most extra help amounts to.

Students taking German at any level, and especially those whose vocabulary is strong but whose accuracy in cases and word order is capping the grade. It rewards students who are willing to learn grammar as a system, because German repays that investment more directly than most languages do.

How lessons run

One-to-one, over video, with a shared whiteboard so tutor and student work on the same page at the same time. Sixty minutes is the default; twice weekly in the eight weeks before a paper.

Every session starts with marked work from the previous week, moves to the day's topic with a worked example, and ends with the student attempting a real past paper question live.
