ICT in Jeddah: what usually goes wrong
Jeddah has an older and more settled international school sector than Riyadh, which changes the nature of the problem rather than removing it. Schools here are less likely to be understaffed and more likely to be large, and in a large cohort a student who is quietly a grade below target is easy to miss until the mocks. The Sunday-to-Thursday week applies here too and needs building into any lesson schedule.
The pattern repeats across schools, and it is rarely about ability. It is about the gap between understanding a topic and being able to perform it under the exact conditions the paper imposes. In ICT specifically, these are where the marks go:
- Practical tasks that are technically correct but lose marks on formatting and evidence requirements
- Spreadsheet functions learned by rote rather than as tools for a stated problem
- Running out of time in the practical papers because tasks are done in an inefficient order
- Underestimating the theory paper because the practical work feels like the real subject
Every one of those is trainable. None of them is fixed by covering the syllabus again more slowly, which is what most extra help amounts to.
Who this suits
Students who want a technology qualification that rewards precision and process rather than programming, and who will be assessed largely on practical work produced under time pressure.
Which level is your child at?
Each level asks for something different, and preparation that ignores that difference wastes time. These pages set out what changes at each stage:
How lessons run
One-to-one, over video, with a shared whiteboard so tutor and student work on the same page at the same time. Sixty minutes is the default; twice weekly in the eight weeks before a paper.
Every session starts with marked work from the previous week, moves to the day's topic with a worked example, and ends with the student attempting a real past paper question live. After it, you get a written note from the tutor saying what was covered and what needs to happen next. The full process is here.
What it costs
USD 20-40 per 60-minute lesson, depending on level: the same rate wherever the student is, because the lesson is the same. Billed monthly against lessons actually taught, with no prepaid blocks and no minimum commitment. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.
ICT tutoring in Jeddah: common questions
Is ICT easier than Computer Science?
No, it is a different kind of difficult. Most of the IGCSE is assessed at a computer under strict time pressure, and the practical papers are marked on evidence rather than intention: correct work saved or named wrongly scores nothing.
How is practical work taught online?
The student works on their own machine while sharing their screen, which is closer to exam conditions than watching a demonstration. Timed past papers marked together against the published scheme is what changes results here.
Does it matter that our computer is a Mac and school uses Windows?
It can, particularly for spreadsheet function differences and file format requirements. Preparation should be done in the environment the student will actually sit the exam in, with the differences flagged explicitly rather than discovered on the day.
My child is in a large cohort and seems to be slipping quietly. Is that common?
Very. Jeddah's international schools are well established and often large, and in a big cohort a student who is a grade below target is genuinely easy to miss until the mocks. That is usually what brings families to us, and the first useful step is a marked past paper rather than more revision.
What time do lessons run?
Evenings in Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3, Sunday to Thursday, with weekend mornings on Friday and Saturday available before exam series.
Do you help with coursework deadlines as well as exams?
Yes, and they are frequently the more urgent problem. IB Internal Assessments and A Level coursework carry a substantial share of the grade and run on deadlines that arrive well before the written papers, which is exactly why they get deprioritised.
