Physics in Riyadh: what usually goes wrong

Riyadh's international school sector has grown quickly, and growth of that speed has a predictable side effect: schools hire faster than they can be selective, and subject depth at sixth form is the first thing to suffer. The other thing to plan around is the week itself: school runs Sunday to Thursday here, so a tutoring schedule built on a Monday-to-Friday assumption will collide with the weekend twice a month.

The pattern repeats across schools, and it is rarely about ability. It is about the gap between understanding a topic and being able to perform it under the exact conditions the paper imposes. In Physics specifically, these are where the marks go:

• Definitions written loosely: the mark scheme wants specific words and awards nothing for the general idea
• Units and significant figures dropped, which costs marks on questions that were otherwise correct
• Difficulty converting a described scenario into the right equation, especially in multi-stage questions
• Required practicals and graph analysis treated as secondary, when they carry predictable and recoverable marks

How lessons run

One-to-one, over video, with a shared whiteboard so tutor and student work on the same page at the same time. Sixty minutes is the default; twice weekly in the eight weeks before a paper.

Every session starts with marked work from the previous week, moves to the day's topic with a worked example, and ends with the student attempting a real past paper question live.
