French in Sharjah: what usually goes wrong

Sharjah families frequently do something the school system does not account for: the student attends school in one emirate and lives in another, losing an hour or more each way. By the time they are home, an in-person tutor is not a realistic weekly arrangement. The curriculum mix here is also wider than in Dubai, which means the first question, which syllabus is this student actually entered for, matters more, and is answered wrongly more often.

The pattern repeats across schools, and it is rarely about ability. It is about the gap between understanding a topic and being able to perform it under the exact conditions the paper imposes. In French specifically, these are where the marks go:

  • Speaking under-practised because it is the least comfortable skill, despite being very trainable
  • Vocabulary learned as isolated words rather than in the phrases that make it usable under pressure
  • Verb tenses recognised in reading but not produced accurately in writing
  • Listening treated as untrainable, when it improves quickly with the right structured practice

Every one of those is trainable. None of them is fixed by covering the syllabus again more slowly, which is what most extra help amounts to.

Who this suits

Students taking French at any level, and particularly those whose written work is solid but who freeze in the speaking exam, which is the most common single-skill weakness.

Which level is your child at?

Each level asks for something different, and preparation that ignores that difference wastes time. These pages set out what changes at each stage:

How lessons run

One-to-one, over video, with a shared whiteboard so tutor and student work on the same page at the same time. Sixty minutes is the default; twice weekly in the eight weeks before a paper.

Every session starts with marked work from the previous week, moves to the day's topic with a worked example, and ends with the student attempting a real past paper question live. After it, you get a written note from the tutor saying what was covered and what needs to happen next. The full process is here.

What it costs

USD 20-40 per 60-minute lesson, depending on level: the same rate wherever the student is, because the lesson is the same. Billed monthly against lessons actually taught, with no prepaid blocks and no minimum commitment. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.

French tutoring in Sharjah: common questions

Which skill usually holds the grade back?

Speaking, for most students, because it is the least comfortable to practise and the easiest to postpone. It is also highly trainable: structured practice with unpredictable follow-up questions improves it faster than almost any other intervention.

How should vocabulary be learned?

In phrases, not as isolated words. A student who has learned chunks they can deploy produces accurate French under pressure; one who has learned word lists has to assemble sentences from scratch, which is slow and error-prone in an exam.

Is listening practice actually useful?

Yes, and students often assume otherwise because progress feels invisible. Regular short sessions with authentic material at a slightly uncomfortable speed improve it reliably, where occasional long sessions do not.

My child goes to school in Dubai but we live in Sharjah. Does that matter?

It matters a great deal for scheduling, and it is one of the most common situations we see. With an hour or more of commuting each way, an in-person tutor is rarely a commitment that survives the term. Online sessions start when your child is home rather than when they have finished travelling to someone.

Which curricula do you cover for Sharjah schools?

The curriculum mix here is wider than in Dubai, so establishing the exact syllabus your child is entered for is the first thing we do. We teach to Cambridge and other British-curriculum specifications and to the IB; if a student is on a syllabus we do not cover, we will say so rather than improvise.

What do lessons cost in Sharjah?

USD 20-40 per 60-minute lesson depending on level, billed monthly against lessons actually taught. We price in US dollars and charge the same rates everywhere we teach, because the lesson is identical wherever the student is. The full breakdown by level is on the pricing page, and there are no prepaid packages or registration fees.
