ICT in Dubai: what usually goes wrong
Dubai's schools sit at the sharp end of a problem their curricula were never designed for: classes are often taught by teachers whose specialism is something adjacent, in schools expanding faster than they can hire. Strong students coast through Year 10 on general ability and then meet an exam that asks for something specific (a precise definition, an argued judgement, an algorithm written cold on paper) and discover that ability was never the thing being tested.
The pattern repeats across schools, and it is rarely about ability. It is about the gap between understanding a topic and being able to perform it under the exact conditions the paper imposes. In ICT specifically, these are where the marks go:
- Practical tasks that are technically correct but lose marks on formatting and evidence requirements
- Spreadsheet functions learned by rote rather than as tools for a stated problem
- Running out of time in the practical papers because tasks are done in an inefficient order
- Underestimating the theory paper because the practical work feels like the real subject
Every one of those is trainable. None of them is fixed by covering the syllabus again more slowly, which is what most extra help amounts to.
Who this suits
Students who want a technology qualification that rewards precision and process rather than programming, and who will be assessed largely on practical work produced under time pressure.
Which level is your child at?
Each level asks for something different, and preparation that ignores that difference wastes time. These pages set out what changes at each stage:
How lessons run
One-to-one, over video, with a shared whiteboard so tutor and student work on the same page at the same time. Sixty minutes is the default; twice weekly in the eight weeks before a paper.
Every session starts with marked work from the previous week, moves to the day's topic with a worked example, and ends with the student attempting a real past paper question live. After it, you get a written note from the tutor saying what was covered and what needs to happen next. The full process is here.
What it costs
USD 20-40 per 60-minute lesson, depending on level: the same rate wherever the student is, because the lesson is the same. Billed monthly against lessons actually taught, with no prepaid blocks and no minimum commitment. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.
ICT tutoring in Dubai: common questions
Which ICT syllabuses do you cover for Dubai students?
Cambridge IGCSE Information and Communication Technology 0417 and Cambridge International AS & A Level Information Technology 9626, both taught to the current published specification.
Can you help specifically with the practical components?
Yes, and for most students that is where the work should go. Paper 2 and Component 3 together are 60% of the IGCSE, and marks are lost far more often to process and evidence errors than to not knowing how a function works.
My child's school teaches ICT with a non-specialist teacher. Can tutoring fill that gap?
Partly, and honestly. One hour a week cannot replace five hours of specialist classroom teaching, but it can make sure the syllabus is actually covered, that past papers are practised under real conditions, and that the student knows exactly what each component asks for. That is often the difference between two grades.
Do you provide the software needed for practical work?
No, but nothing exotic is required. A standard office suite and a plain text editor cover the IGCSE; we will tell you before the trial class if a student's setup is missing something that matters.
Is ICT easier than Computer Science?
No, it is a different kind of difficult. Most of the IGCSE is assessed at a computer under strict time pressure, and the practical papers are marked on evidence rather than intention: correct work saved or named wrongly scores nothing.
How is practical work taught online?
The student works on their own machine while sharing their screen, which is closer to exam conditions than watching a demonstration. Timed past papers marked together against the published scheme is what changes results here.
Does it matter that our computer is a Mac and school uses Windows?
It can, particularly for spreadsheet function differences and file format requirements. Preparation should be done in the environment the student will actually sit the exam in, with the differences flagged explicitly rather than discovered on the day.
What time do lessons run for students in Dubai?
Weekday evenings between roughly 4pm and 9pm Gulf Standard Time, which fits around a school day that usually ends between 2pm and 3:30pm. Weekend morning slots open up in the months before the May/June series.
