Geography in Jeddah: what usually goes wrong
Jeddah has an older and more settled international school sector than Riyadh, which changes the nature of the problem rather than removing it. Schools here are less likely to be understaffed and more likely to be large, and in a large cohort a student who is quietly a grade below target is easy to miss until the mocks. The Sunday-to-Thursday week applies here too and needs building into any lesson schedule.
The pattern repeats across schools, and it is rarely about ability. It is about the gap between understanding a topic and being able to perform it under the exact conditions the paper imposes. In Geography specifically, these are where the marks go:
- Case studies recalled vaguely, with no place names, dates or numbers: the exact detail the marks are for
- Skills questions on graphs and statistics under-revised despite being highly predictable
- Physical processes described as sequences of events without explaining the mechanism
- Fieldwork questions answered generically rather than from the student's own investigation
Every one of those is trainable. None of them is fixed by covering the syllabus again more slowly, which is what most extra help amounts to.
Who this suits
Students heading for geography, environmental science, planning or international relations, and anyone whose general understanding is strong but whose answers lack the named detail examiners reward.
Which level is your child at?
Each level asks for something different, and preparation that ignores that difference wastes time. These pages set out what changes at each stage:
- IGCSE Geography · Years 10-11
- A Level Geography · Years 12-13
- IB Geography · Years 12-13
- University Geography · Undergraduate
How lessons run
One-to-one, over video, with a shared whiteboard so tutor and student work on the same page at the same time. Sixty minutes is the default; twice weekly in the eight weeks before a paper.
Every session starts with marked work from the previous week, moves to the day's topic with a worked example, and ends with the student attempting a real past paper question live. After it, you get a written note from the tutor saying what was covered and what needs to happen next. The full process is here.
What it costs
USD 20-40 per 60-minute lesson, depending on level: the same rate wherever the student is, because the lesson is the same. Billed monthly against lessons actually taught, with no prepaid blocks and no minimum commitment. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.
Geography tutoring in Jeddah: common questions
Why do case studies matter so much?
Because they are where the marks are. A general description of coastal erosion earns little; the same answer with a named location, dates, figures and specific management strategies earns full credit. Detail is the currency of this subject.
How many case studies should be learned?
Fewer than most students attempt, in far more detail. A small bank of thoroughly known examples that can be adapted across questions beats a long list of half-remembered ones.
Is the skills paper worth revising separately?
Yes, and it is under-revised relative to how predictable it is. Graph interpretation, statistical techniques and map skills recur in recognisable forms every series, which makes them some of the most reliably recoverable marks.
My child is in a large cohort and seems to be slipping quietly. Is that common?
Very. Jeddah's international schools are well established and often large, and in a big cohort a student who is a grade below target is genuinely easy to miss until the mocks. That is usually what brings families to us, and the first useful step is a marked past paper rather than more revision.
What time do lessons run?
Evenings in Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3, Sunday to Thursday, with weekend mornings on Friday and Saturday available before exam series.
Do you help with coursework deadlines as well as exams?
Yes, and they are frequently the more urgent problem. IB Internal Assessments and A Level coursework carry a substantial share of the grade and run on deadlines that arrive well before the written papers, which is exactly why they get deprioritised.
