Social Studies in Jeddah: what usually goes wrong
Jeddah has an older and more settled international school sector than Riyadh, which changes the nature of the problem rather than removing it. Schools here are less likely to be understaffed and more likely to be large, and in a large cohort a student who is quietly a grade below target is easy to miss until the mocks. The Sunday-to-Thursday week applies here too and needs building into any lesson schedule.
The pattern repeats across schools, and it is rarely about ability. It is about the gap between understanding a topic and being able to perform it under the exact conditions the paper imposes. In Social Studies specifically, these are where the marks go:
- Answers written as opinion without evidence, a habit that becomes expensive at IGCSE
- Source and data questions approached without any method
- Topics learned separately with no sense of how economic and social factors interact
- Key terms used loosely, which undermines later subjects that depend on them
Every one of those is trainable. None of them is fixed by covering the syllabus again more slowly, which is what most extra help amounts to.
Who this suits
Middle-school students, and those who will go on to humanities subjects at IGCSE and want the underlying skills to be solid rather than improvised. The habits it builds (supporting claims with evidence, handling sources, using terms precisely) are assumed by every humanities subject that follows.
Which level is your child at?
Each level asks for something different, and preparation that ignores that difference wastes time. These pages set out what changes at each stage:
How lessons run
One-to-one, over video, with a shared whiteboard so tutor and student work on the same page at the same time. Sixty minutes is the default; twice weekly in the eight weeks before a paper.
Every session starts with marked work from the previous week, moves to the day's topic with a worked example, and ends with the student attempting a real past paper question live. After it, you get a written note from the tutor saying what was covered and what needs to happen next. The full process is here.
What it costs
USD 20-40 per 60-minute lesson, depending on level: the same rate wherever the student is, because the lesson is the same. Billed monthly against lessons actually taught, with no prepaid blocks and no minimum commitment. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.
Social Studies tutoring in Jeddah: common questions
What is Social Studies preparing students for?
The skills that history, geography and sociology later assume: supporting claims with evidence, handling sources, and using key terms precisely. Building those habits here makes the IGCSE humanities considerably easier.
Why do answers score lower than expected?
Usually because they are written as opinion. The habit of supporting every claim with a piece of evidence is the single most valuable thing to establish at this stage, and it becomes expensive to fix later.
Is it worth tutoring at this level?
It can be, but often the better investment is on the underlying skills rather than the subject content, since those transfer to every humanities subject that follows.
My child is in a large cohort and seems to be slipping quietly. Is that common?
Very. Jeddah's international schools are well established and often large, and in a big cohort a student who is a grade below target is genuinely easy to miss until the mocks. That is usually what brings families to us, and the first useful step is a marked past paper rather than more revision.
What time do lessons run?
Evenings in Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3, Sunday to Thursday, with weekend mornings on Friday and Saturday available before exam series.
Do you help with coursework deadlines as well as exams?
Yes, and they are frequently the more urgent problem. IB Internal Assessments and A Level coursework carry a substantial share of the grade and run on deadlines that arrive well before the written papers, which is exactly why they get deprioritised.
